The Smithsonian’s National Zoo joyously welcomed a baby boy western lowland gorilla after a gap of 9 years! He goes by the name Moke, which means “little one,” as mentioned by pintiks.

Following the birth, there was a heartwarming moment captured on camera— the mother, Calaya, was seen kissing her baby on the lips. Calaya, a 15-year-old gorilla, mated with Baraka, a 26-year-old, 450-pound gorilla, just before her third year at the zoo.

Amidst the recent decline of 20–25 years in the wild western lowland gorilla population, this birth holds immense significance. What an incredible moment to celebrate!
